Here’s how it works:
- First you’ll need to establish and register your SMSF with the Australian Tax Office (ATO).
- Once your SMSF is established and registered, you can open a CommSec Share Trading Account.
- You can then link your CommSec Share Trading Account to an SMSF cash account – Commonwealth Direct Investment Account (CDIA)2 – for seamless trade settlements and to benefit from lower brokerage costs.

Already a CommSec customer?
Managing your SMSF with CommSec is simple. Log into CommSec below and follow the prompts.
What you’ll need to sign up:
- Your CommSec credentials, such as your client ID and password
- Your CDIA and Australian Share Trading Account details
- Your Tax File Number (optional)
- Your SMSF and trustee details as reflected in the SMSF Trust Deed, including a valid ABN for the SMSF

Joining CommSec is free. To get started, you'll need to open a CDIA and CommSec Share Trading Account below.
What you’ll need to sign up:
- Your personal and contact details
- Your tax residency details
- A valid photo ID
- Your Tax File Number (optional)

Data feeds are available on CommSec Share Trading Accounts that are CHESS-sponsored. To enable data feeds, you’ll need to complete an authority form, available from your SMSF accounting software provider. Please contact your provider to see if this feature is supported.
